Pretty Together was actually the first Sloan album that I heard. I had a really hard time getting into them until someone said, "Maybe you should listen to Twice Removed". That pretty much set me straight. There are good moments on both of those albums for sure, songwriting wise. I don't care much for the production of Action Pact and I can take or leave Pretty Together.

Re: Album review: Sloan – “The Double Cross”

Great review, couldn't have said it better myself. Love the record.

I also don't understand the hate for Action Pact and Pretty Together... PT may be my favorite Sloan album....

Re: Record Store Day, 2011

My favorite record stores no longer exist. Secret Sounds in Bridgeport, CT (Thurston Moore used to shop there) and Kim's on St. Marks Place in NYC. Spent who knows how much time/money there, but it was worth every second/penny.

Re: Record Store Day, 2011

i would like to add: home of this hits in buffalo ny. i think its closed now, but that was a great little shop. picked up a lot of cd there where while in college. i remember seeing a poole cd there in the used been for like 2 years. it was the last cd i purcased there before we moved away.

other great grabs from there: bjork - glinglo, all the elliot smith albums, flamming lips soft bulletin, clash - london calling. so much stuff...the one guy that owned it was like ADD. he would put on a record and play like 2 songs..and start a third and then suddenly put on a different record, IN MID SONG..it drove me nuts. but i miss it.

we would also hit this place called record theather on main street. it was right across from south campus UB so it was convient. it had a huge used section and some vinyl. we picked up a vinyl copy of siamese dream there. the place always smelled like crayons.

Re: Interpol – “Our Love to Admire”

Saw them in concert tonight....they were amazing. Yeah, I also hear the similarities with Hum. Must have been something in the water in Champaign in the early 90's. Thanks for reading!

Re: Braid re-releases on Polyvinyl

Holy shit,I totally remember seeing these guys play! At the risk of giving away my age,I was a student at nearby Eastern Illinois University and would often trek up to Champaign to catch loads of punk rock acts, local and abroad. I thought Braid would have broken mild success ala Hum(also from Champaign)but alas. Thanks for jarring loose the good memories.

Re: Braid re-releases on Polyvinyl

Best band ever... <3

Re: Album Review: of Montreal – “False Priest”

Wow...this whole album sounds amazing to me..mainly because I'm a huge fan of Jon Brion. In some ways, it seems a bit of an odd pairing but in other ways it seems like it could work perfectly with Brion's way of layering music and making the simplest chord progression seem grandiose in a great way.

Thanks for piquing my interest! Awesome Janelle Monae makes an appearance too!

Re: Album review: Titus Andronicus – “The Monitor”

Excuse my french but, This post makes my mind spin at the speed of dark.

For completely different reasons. Surfer blood satisfies my want for loud, jangly garage rock and Neon Indian is doing something I think that is completely new, or at least was completely new when they first started. I think of Neon Indian in the same way that I think of Brian Jonestown Massacre: as post-modern. They re-interpret the music of 20 years before they began creating music, and filter it through modern interpretation. I like. Plus Neon Indian has some Sonic Youth elements to them too.

Re: I’m making you a mixtape (Pitchfork Music Festival 2010 edition) 3/3

I can't get into Surfer Blood or Neon Indian I'm afraid. I kind of think the new Interpol probably won't be too good...but I'm cynical. I see a whole range of school situations across Chicago and even some "Magnet" schools don't have music or art. Instead, it's literally Math and Reading 2 hours each then Science and lunch. That's the day! There's no chance for kids to learn to express themselves or develop a self concept that has anything to do with an art form. It's just memorize and regurgitate...so sad! I think the more you allow your brain to develop, especially early on, the more you're able to reason politically and understand your place in the world around you. I just don't see too much of that going on.
